Healthy Mexican Food A Reality

Mexican dishes are extremely tasty, but they are often times loaded with processed carbs, high in sodium and buried in high-fat extras. It is possible, however, to make some simple substitutions that will make your Mexican meal not only healthy, but delicious!

Add flavor with spices – A tasty way to add immense flavor and lessen the amount of sodium in conventional Mexican food is to add some zest with spices. Try replacing high those store bought seasoning packets that are high in sodium with cayenne, black pepper, chili powder and oregano. Kick it up another notch with fresh lemon or lime juice and cut up green and red peppers.

Healthy fillings – Shredded chicken, ground turkey, fish and other lean meats are excellent substitutions for high-fat cuts of meat like beef that is usually in Mexican food. Be sure to spice it up (and add nutrients) by throwing in such vegetables as diced tomatoes, chopped onions, shredded lettuce, habanero’s and red peppers.

Wraps – Add even more taste and nutrition by opting for whole wheat or whole grain tortillas instead of the more traditional flour tortillas. And forget about the greasy store bought chips! Instead make cut up a whole grain tortilla into smaller pieces and bake them to create your own healthy chips. Dip them in salsa and you have yourself a healthy and nutritious appetizer.

Choose toppings wisely – Even if you have the healthiest Mexican dish to start out with, over usage of high-fat and calorie rich toppings will ruin it in no time flat. Stick with low-fat sour cream or cheese instead of there full fat counterparts. And don’t forget the salsa! It’s the perfect topping – nutritious, low in calories and adds a lot of flavor.

As you can see, you don’t have to sacrifice taste to enjoy a delicious Mexican meal. Just make a few substitutions and you’ll have a healthy meal in no time!
